OSIRIS-REx

OSIRIS-REx is the first U.S. mission to collect a sample from an asteroid. It returned to Earth on Sept. 24, 2023, to drop off a capsule with material from asteroid Bennu. After dropping off the sample through Earth''s atmosphere, the spacecraft was renamed OSIRIS-APEX and sent on a new mission to explore asteroid Apophis in 2029.

JPL Science: NEAT

The Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) project comprises two autonomous observing systems at the Maui Space Surveillance Site, NEAT/MSSS, and at Palomar Observatory, NEAT/Palomar. At both sites the NEAT cameras use 1.2-m (48") telescopes to find Near-Earth objects (NEOs), both Near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) and comets.

NASA''s Planetary Radar Tracks Two Large Asteroid Close

The asteroid 2024 MK was first reported on June 16 by the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) at Sutherland Observing Station in South Africa. Its orbit was changed by Earth''s gravity as it passed by, reducing its 3.3-year orbital period around the Sun by about 24 days.

What is the largest asteroid ever measured by planetary radar?

The three-quarters-of-a-mile (1.3-kilometers) wide object was the 1,001st near-Earth asteroid to be measured by planetary radar since 1968. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech Seven days after this historic milestone, a massive antenna at NASA''s Deep Space Network Goldstone complex imaged another, far larger object.

How often do asteroids approach the Earth?

A measure of how infrequent the Earth close approach is for asteroids of the same size and larger: 0 means an average frequency of 100 per year, i.e., roughly every few days or less, 1 corresponds to roughly once a month, 2 to roughly once a year, 3 to roughly once a decade, etc. ''n/a'' means that a frequency estimate is not available.

What is the asteroid watch dashboard?

The Asteroid Watch dashboard tracks asteroids and comets that will make relatively close approaches to Earth. The dashboard displays the date of closest approach, approximate object diameter, relative size and distance from Earth for each encounter. The object''s name is displayed by hovering over its encounter date.

Apophis

It originated in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Over millions of years, its orbit was changed primarily by the gravitational influence of large planets like Jupiter so that it now orbits the Sun closer to Earth. As a result, Apophis is classified as a near-Earth asteroid, as opposed to a main-belt asteroid.
